Posti’s art award 2023 to Christoffer Relander

Posti Ltd has granted the stamp art promotion award for 2023 to art photographer Christoffer Relander, who is known for his multiple exposure photographs that combine human figures and nature. Posti’s art award includes a prize of EUR 10,000 and a stamp publication of the artist’s works.

Two of Christoffer Relander’s photographs were chosen as the theme for the stamps to be issued in September 2023: Perfume from 2013 and Butterfly Mind II from 2023. Both photos are from the series
We Are Nature, which Relander started in 2010. “The series still continues today and has become an increasingly personal project over the years,” he says.

The stamps designed by Relander also include a 2D barcode, which makes the mechanical sorting of items easier.

Multiple exposure paintings with a camera

Christoffer Relander familiarized himself with photography while serving as a graphic designer for the Nyland Brigade’s magazine during his military service. “I became fascinated with multiple exposure when I realized that I could use the technique to make photos, and not just take them. Creating a multiple exposure photo is similar to painting and visual design. Training in graphic design provides a good foundation for mastering dynamic shapes and silhouettes.”

Relander is interested in the history of multiple exposure, and he has created multiple exposure photographs traditionally with film as well as with a digital camera and image processing software. “Regardless of the technology used, multiple exposure requires a great deal of advance planning and patience. You’ll make a lot of mistakes when shooting multiple exposures, from which you’ll learn something new every time. You’ll learn how the algorithm works by experimenting.”

“I grew up in the countryside and spent a lot of time in the forest as a child. In a sense, I still play in the woods in my photos”

Nature and human beings as key themes

The themes of Christoffer Relander’s photos are nature, humans, timelessness, surrealism and poetry.

Nature has been an important part of Relander’s life since childhood. “I grew up in the countryside and spent a lot of time in the forest as a child. In a sense, I still play in the woods in my photos. Nature constantly gives me new ideas and stimulates my imagination. There is something human about trees, leaves and branches with their shapes and patterns. Deciduous trees and oaks, in particular, are my favorites.”

When photographing people, Relander wants to focus more generally on the human form rather than the individual. “When the people featured in the photos are anonymous, the viewer has more room for their own interpretation. Identifiable persons would draw too much attention to themselves in the photos.”

Christoffer Relander also works on commissioned projects for clients, such as companies that take climate change and sustainable development into account in their operations.

This is the seventh time Posti’s art award has been presented

With its own art award, Posti wants to raise the status of stamps and art and increase people’s appreciation of them. “This is the first time that Posti’s art award is celebrating photography. Christoffer Relander’s multiple exposure art photographs creatively combine human portraits and nature. With his camera, he conjures up dreamlike fairytale worlds in which viewer would also personally like to immerse,” says Tommi Kantola, Design Manager at Posti, who is responsible for the selection of the artists and for providing guidance on the artistic work for the stamps.

This is the seventh time Posti’s art award has been presented. In 2017, the art award went to sculptor Jasmin Anoschkin, in 2018 to graffiti artist EGS, in 2019 to fashion designer Mert Otsamo, in 2020 to visual artist Janne Laine, in 2021 to glass artist Alma Jantunen and in 2022 to sculptor Kim Simonsson.

9TH BEIJING INTERNATIONAL ART BIENNALE 2022

JAN 18, 2022 – MAR 01, 2022 | BEIJING, CHINA

Venue: National Art Museum of China (NAMOC)
EUROPEAN UNION PAVILION “THE SPIRIT OF EUROPE”

For the first time in any international art biennale, works by artists from the European Union, including painting, photography, collage, video, and installations, are brought together in a joint exhibition in one of the four official pavilions of the Beijing International Art Biennale. Christoffer Relander will be representing Finland at this event.

Curatorial topic:
As described by “Creative Europe”, art is a powerful tool that can change the way we think and act. This exhibition is inspired by this broad and powerful concept of art. Could art help us to think and act as European citizens? Could it succeed in defining us with a distinct cultural entity of our own? Could this common exhibition in China help us in this quest for unity? In short, is there such a thing as the “European Spirit”? It is with these questions in mind, and as an experiment, that this exhibition of European art in Beijing was conceived.

Upcoming exhibition at the Nordic Institute on Åland

I am happy to announce that I will be exhibiting my follow-up on my We Are Nature series at the Nordic Institute on Åland. The exhibition will be open for the public between 15 of April until 29 of May.

Sadly the pandemic led to postponed and cancelations of a good portion of my commissioned projects. I went from being booked for a whole year to suddenly having all the time in the world—I was suddenly able to focus on my personal work. This project is the outcome.

“The finnish-swedish Photographer Christoffer Relander’s ”We Are Nature”-series blurs the line between the natural world and the human form to such a degree that it is impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. In doing so, he has not only produced a set of stunning visual images, but also a reminder of the very real universal truth that indeed everything is connected at the deepest of levels”. - NIPÅ

New Project - We Are Nature Vol. VI

I did not plan to finish this series yet. But as the global crisis caused by the Coronavirus, most of my commissioned works are either canceled or postponed. Especially the projects that require travel. I feel sorry for everyone affected.

In 2010 I began my journey experimenting with multiple exposure photography. During the years I have (well, others too) been asking myself sometimes, am I limiting my imagination when strictly sticking to this technique? Today, I am releasing my first personal project that was not created/blended in-camera. I decided to still bring inspiration from both the multiple exposure film algorithms (negative film) and some basic darkroom techniques, I suppose it is only natural to me to keep some limitations. The process has been different; not for the worse—Just different. I hope you enjoy!

New Project – Neonland: Urban Overload

I'm excited to share with you my latest personal project, Neonland. New series of images along with a behind the scenes video.

In this project, I wanted to leave my comfort zone and intentionally multiple expose the contrasting environments of Scandinavian nature and Hong Kong city. To explore two different environments on different sides of the globe, and blend them into a fictional and surreal world; a man-made “Neonscape”. Only by documenting my journey and presenting it in another time frame would make sense to convey my surrealistic vision.

New double exposure project – Jarred & Displaced II

After finishing my first installment of Jarred & Displaced, I decided to start experimenting in color. The whole follow-up project is shot using Nikon D800E's multiple exposure feature, that is replicating the old multiple exposure algorithm.

Jarred & Displaced featured in the Guardian

I'm excited to announce that my latest double exposure project Jarred & Displaced has received good exposure internationally. I'm sorry to plague you with this cliché, but words cannot express how grateful I am. Really! Thank you all for your support; whether it's a kind email or a major publication.

This weekend I was featured in the Guardian, both online and in print in the Observer.

Jarred & Displaced was also recently featured in several major blogs and magazines, including The Creators Project - VICE, Colossal, Booooooom, PetaPixel, Behancé and Photoblog.hk.

New project - Jarred & Displaced

I'm excited to announce a new personal project I've been working on for over a year. It's an ongoing project I'm planning to continue to experiment with. The process is both playful and challenging, I see it as part of the artworks therefor I wanted to document it to share with you guys. Below is the video I made in collaboration with Anders Lönnfeldt.

You can read more about this project and see all artworks by clicking here. Feel free to leave a comment!

PS. New website; this was actually published 18th November.
